Climate-neutral Switzerland 2050: What energy system do we need?

In 2021, the Energy Science Center (ESC) of ETH Zurich once again organised a major energy conference, the “Energy Week @ ETH”.
From Tuesday, 30 November 2021, to Friday, 3 December 2021, the “Energy Week @ ETH” took place under the motto “Climate-neutral Switzerland 2050: What energy system do we need?”.
- Tuesday, 30 November 2021, was dedicated to the motto “Rethinking Tomorrow’s Energy Landscape”. Selected students, young researchers, energy start-ups and energy initiatives will have the opportunity to engage in innovative dialogue and creative brainstorming through a guided design thinking process with the aim of tackling the challenges of tomorrow.
- On Wednesday, 1 December 2021, representatives from science, politics and industry presented and discussed the latest findings on the topic of “Climate-neutral Switzerland 2050: What energy system do we need?”. In addition to presentations on the two core topics of “Energy scenarios for a climate-neutral Switzerland” and “Technological requirements for a sustainable energy system”, participants were also able to gain insights into political decision-making processes and the innovation processes of an energy start-up.
- On Thursday and Friday, 2 and 3 December 2021, the well-known focus dialogues were held on a total of four topics. After short input presentations, the respective experts were available for discussion and questions on the topics of “Seasonal energy storage”, “Sector coupling: electricity, heat, gas”, “Hydrogen as energy storage” and “Automation of electricity grids”.
